Since the island of San Antón and the town were united in the 16th century, the port of Getaria has been one of the safest shelters in the Bay of Biscay, and an important point of inshore fishing.
Currently, it is one of the most important ports in the coastal fisheries of the Basque coast. Species such as anchovy, bonito and verdel are each year the main protagonists of their fishing campaigns.
The Basque Government has made large investments, providing it with one of the best infrastructures on the coast, building a new road access, docks, loading and unloading areas and pontoons for recreational boats. The port of Getaria now has an ideal infrastructure to be a fishing and recreational port.
