Situated at the entrance to the Lorient roadstead, the headland of Kernével was a strategic site during the 18th century, defending Lorient and its prestigious East India Company.
In the 19th century this site was occupied by the canning and preserving industry where a Lorient banker, Auguste Ouizille, founded the first Kernével port. The construction of a dock and an embankment enabled the unloading of fish products and the boarding of passengers towards Lorient and Port-Louis. The Kernével area bears the traces of the family Ouizille, whose name is linked to the three villas that overlook the marina and bear the name ‘Château des Sardines’ (Sardine Castle).
During World War II, the Germans requisitioned the three villas and transformed the headland of Larmor-Plage into an entrenched camp from where Admiral Dönitz directed the Battle of the Atlantic.
Created in 1988, the new Kernével marina has seen its pontoons moored by the greatest names in sailing such as Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, Alain Gautier, Hervé Laurent and Eric Tabarly. An authentic symbol of the growing momentum of pleasure sailing in the Lorient area, Kernével marina has continued its development over the years ensuring a quality service for its users.
